Q&A: Aaron McMurray – Alarm Apprentice

10-02-2021

This National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Aaron McMurray, 2nd year apprentice with Diamond Systems, to ask him how he feels about his training so far, and the challenges presented by COVID-19.

Name: Aaron McMurray

Position: Apprentice Engineer

How long have you been in your role?

I first started with Diamond Systems in August 2019. In my first year I attended Belfast Met 2 days a week and was in work 3 days. I am now into my second year, where I work 4 days a week and attend Belfast Met 1 day a week.

Describe a typical day in work?

Whilst in work there are always various projects taking place. This can range from Intruder Systems, Fire alarms, CCTV or Access Control. This is good because you learn something new everyday and it keeps you interested because you are always working on new projects.

How would you describe the culture within Diamond?

I believe the best way to describe the culture within Diamond would be that it is a professional company that carries work out to the highest of standards. Everyone in the company is very helpful and all the engineers will always explain to me fully how the equipment works so I can get a greater understanding and always give me the chance to install the equipment myself.

What do you like most about your role?

Something I enjoy most about my role is that it always keep me interested. This is because I am always coming across new challenges and learning new things everyday. I also love to travel all over the country and get to experience places I’ve never been to before.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your training?

Normally whilst we are in Belfast Met we usually have access to a workshop, where we install equipment and get to know it. However due to COVID 19 we have been unable to attend Belfast Met. We are currently being taught remotely through zoom. This means I am still unfamiliar with some equipment in the workshop due to not being able to work with it.
