Technical Design Support for Specifiers of Life Safety & Security Systems

As specialists in life safety and security systems, our qualified design team can offer training and design support to consultant engineers and specifiers of life safety and security systems.

In any profession, regular development activities are an essential way of keeping your skills and knowledge up to date. Design support services offered by Diamond Systems are aimed at those involved in the design of security and fire detection systems, including Consultant Engineers, Architects and Specifiers. The training will also benefit professionals who need to understand the design requirements of these systems, including building control officers, fire prevention officers, fire safety personnel, fire risk assessors, and local authorities.

Our courses take the form of a 1 hour presentation, in which delegates are provided with an overview of key design considerations and an update on any recent changes to the Codes of Practice.

In addition to CPD training sessions, Diamond Systems can also provide project-specific design support to consultant engineers and design teams. Our experienced design specialists can assist with the interpretation of relevant standards, system selection, device siting strategies and practical installation considerations to help ensure that designs are both compliant and deliverable in practice. This collaborative approach can help reduce redesign during construction, minimise installation issues and support the successful delivery of life safety and security systems.

Course 1: An introduction to Fire Detection Design 

The Introduction to Fire Detection Design course is ideal for anyone new to the fire alarm industry, or those who require a refresher on the basic principles of Fire Detection Design.

The course provides an outline of the main standards and codes of practice applicable to Fire Detection Design, for both domestic and non-domestic systems. The basic principles of fire detection design are covered in this course, which provides a foundation for courses 2 and 3.

  • Outline of fire alarm regulatory framework
  • Initial considerations for the designer
  • Fire alarm categories
  • Responsibilities of Designer vs Installation Engineers vs Commissioning Engineers

Course 2: Fire Detection Design Considerations under BS5839-1

The Fire Detection Design Considerations course provides an insight into the key design considerations within BS5839-1, the Code of Practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises.

Including an update on the latest changes within the Code of Practice, the course highlights some of the common pitfalls at design stage, based on our 35 plus years’ experience as specialists in this sector.

Content includes:

  • Detector selection, siting and spacing
  • Void Detection
  • Beam Detection
  • Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD)
  • Audible and Visual Alarm Devices
  • Manual Call Points
  • Fire Alarm Zone Plans

Course 3: A Comparison of BS5839-1 with IS3218

This course provides an overview of key design differences between BS5839-1, the UK Code of Practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises, and IS3218, the Irish Standard for Fire Alarm Design.
